We’ve been building connections, understanding and trust for 90 years ...

We’ve developed deep and long-lasting relationships between the UK and other countries.

And created opportunities for millions of people around the world.

Discover how we are adapting to meet the needs of a changing world and empowering young people through our work in arts and culture, education and the English language.

The British Council today

We live in an increasingly interconnected world. Yet divisions and volatility continue to pose a threat. As we reflect on how the world has changed over 90 years, our work to grow connections, support understanding and build trust is as relevant and vital as ever, for a more peaceful and prosperous world.

Looking to the future, we remain focused on the most human of endeavours: we are here to get people connected, communicating and working together.

90 Youth Voices

Throughout our history we have consistently offered opportunities for young people to have their voices heard on a global stage. We help them develop skills and confidence to work together to address the challenges which face us all.

In our 90th year we are bringing 90 young people from around the world to the UK to work together. These young leaders will play a vital role in shaping the British Council's response to local and global issues.

Oral histories

Our 90 year history is full of people who have had inspiring, insightful and sometimes life-changing experiences with us. We are curating a selection of audio interviews, hearing first-hand from the people who have helped shape our story.

The interviews will be archived in the British Library as part of the UK's national sound collection and will inform new research and analysis of our work, approach and impact. We’ll be exploring how the British Council has changed over time and what this can tell us about the wider history of the UK in the world – and about the past, present and future of international cultural relations.
