'The most cutting-edge music show coming out of Britain.' - Sunday Times

In 2013 The British Council - the UK’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations – partnered with the Student Radio Association (SRA) to offer six UK student radio stations the chance to produce and present their own version of The British Council’s weekly radio show The Selector.

Originally launched in 2001, The Selector is an international showcase for the best new music the UK has to offer, a weekly programme that covers all styles of music, from indie, dubstep, folk, grime, electro and everything in between. The show features interviews, mixes and exclusive live sessions from some of the most exciting British artists.

The Selector has recently featured interviews and live sessions from British artists such as Bombay Bicycle Club, Maximo Park, British Sea Power and Tribes; as well as exclusive mixes from DJs such as Ital Tek, Om Unit, Swindle, Mount Kimbie and Andrew Weatherall.

Folded Wing, the award-winning production company behind The Selector, gave the students taking part in the project an in-depth production training day; and the student station that did the best job of producing their own version of The Selector over a six month period would win a trip to Mexico to spend a week working at The British Council’s sister station, Ibero 90.9 FM, in Mexico City.

At the Student Radio Conference in Newcastle this week, The British Council announced that the student winner of the trip to Mexico is Jack Saunders of Fly FM/Nottingham Trent University.

Phil Catchpole, Selector Programme Manager for The British Council, said; “This initiative has been a fantastic experience. Thanks to Folded Wing and the Student Radio Association we have been able to provide tremendous in depth radio production and presenting skills training to some of the most exciting, up and coming British talent. Being able to use The Selector to do this has been a great way of connecting with young people in the UK and providing opportunities both here and abroad.”

Hosted by DJ and presenter Goldierocks, The Selector presents an overview of all that is exciting and fresh in British music, and is syndicated on FM stations in 40 countries around the world including Mexico, Columbia, Israel, Poland, Malawi, Hungary, Indonesia, Bulgaria and China.

Uniquely, The Selector is made available in a Kit format which breaks the show down into its individual parts (songs, jingles plus a script). This enables international stations to make their own bespoke version of the show, using their own presenter if they wish, and broadcasting the show in their own language.
