Learning to code at Summer School
We are using the micro:bit to teach students how to code in English
In Summer 2018, Summer Plus in Spain ran in eight teaching centres helping over 1,800 young people learn English through coding.
We used the BBC micro:bit – a tiny programmable computer designed for children to make learning easy and fun.
The Micro:bit lessons in Summer Plus help students:
Combining English language and computer skills empowers children with critical skills for their future.
'With an estimated 900,000 unfilled tech positions by 2020, language learning on its own is no longer enough.'
‘I didn’t know anything about coding, and now I have three micro:bits! I plan to use them a lot now’
Daniel, age 13, student
‘With only a micro:bit you can do many things! I’ve made a keyboard and a reaction time game’
Lucia, age 9, student
82% of parents in 2018 saw an improvement in their child's speaking ability after Summer Plus
"Micro:bit is compatible with almost every coding language. I’m going to continue learning about micro:bit in the future"
Daniel, age 13, student
‘The micro:bit classes have been an incredible addition to our courses this year. They allow students to code in English and work on dynamic projects where they are thinking, designing and coding. This work has really helped boost their confidence when speaking in English.’
Ruth, Young Learner Manager, Spain
Our British Council teachers are highly qualified with many years of experience and understand the needs and interests of children.
‘The students have become more confident as the classes go on, they have been helping each other, collaborating, coming up with their own genius inventions!’
Louise, Summer Plus teacher
‘They get a real sense of achievement putting something together and showing their friends’
Ian, Summer Plus teacher
