About the Project

English Language Teacher Education Project (EL-TEP) is a 2-year pilot project jointly implemented by the Government of Nepal’s Centre for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD) and British Council. The project focuses on developing both content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge of English language teachers (ELT) from government schools teaching 9 -14-year olds. 

The project follows CEHRD’s Teacher Professional Development (TPD) Programme – 10 days of face-to-face training followed by five days of classroom projects. This is done in two phases over a period of two and a half years. This pilot project is being supplemented with monthly Teacher Activity Group’s (TAGs) where teachers meet to access print, digital and mobile self-access resources for their own Continuing Professional Development (CPD).  TAGs are being facilitated by trainers at the local level. 

The project is currently in the implementation phase. Face to face training materials for Phase 1: ELT content and language proficiency and Phase 2: ELT pedagogy have been developed. However, due to COVID 19 pandemic, face to face training is not possible. To overcome this constraint the training materials Phase 2: ELT pedagogy need to be adapted for online training based on virtual TPD training guidelines published by CEHRD. 

About the Role 

We are seeking an academic consultant to work on the adaptation described where it includes the following main duties: 

  • Review the existing TPD curriculum for EL-TEP Phase 2 face-to-face training resources and virtual TPD training guidelines published by Centre for Education and Human Resources Development
  • Aapt the trainer notes and participant’s handbook according to the virtual training guidelines, ensuring that it still meets the objectives of the training curriculum
  • Ensure materials demonstrate compliance with British Council policies in safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion, and environmental policies and standards.
  • Remotely facilitate regular progress review meetings with the project team.

Timeline:

November

- Meeting with the project team (half a day)

- Review the TPD curriculum, face to face resources and virtual guidelines (2 days)

December

- Adapt the resources into online mode and submit to the project team for feedback (15 days)

January

- Address the comments from the project team and finalize the resources (2 days)

We anticipate 19.5 days of consultancy time for this role. 

Qualifications and experience required

Essential

  • Cambridge ESOL Delta (or equivalent). 
  • Evidence of successful writing of high-quality online and self-access materials that facilitate effective teacher learning. 
  • Evidence of delivering high quality work, as commissioned, to deadline and without close supervision.
  • Experience of developing courses on ELT pedagogy
  • Experience of working with / teaching adults. 

Desirable

  • Experience of working in the education sector in South Asia.
