The second in our series exploring the British Council’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this report focuses on SDG16, which centres on peace, justice and strong institutions.

2018 saw the launch of the Sustaining Peace Agenda, in which the UN renewed its commitment to peacebuilding; the centenary year of the Armistice, which brought to an end the First World War; the centenary of Nobel Peace Laureate Nelson Mandela; and the 20th anniversary of the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement, which brought to an end a period of violent conflict often referred to as ‘the Troubles’.

This research and case studies centre on how the British Council’s work around the world and across many sectors -  English language, the arts, sport, education and civil society – is making a contribution to the aims of SDG16: to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
