Linked to this year’s Safer Internet Day 2022 theme of ‘All fun and games? Exploring respect and relationships online’ we will hear examples and reflections from educators about how they and their schools are ensuring pupils are informed on safe internet use.
About the panel
This is a panel event, with speakers from around the world, followed by questions from the audience.
Shannon West, principal consultant working on schools at the British Council, will host and share examples of digital risks and solutions found in the Mandarin Excellence Programme, which delivered the largest virtual trip for pupils to China in 2021, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education in China and partner universities.
Lawrence Tijjani is the founder and CEO of Happy2Host Edu, a professional development and creative agency that supports educators.
Lawrence has been involved in education for over 16 years. He began as a computing teacher, progressing to strategic IT Lead and later head of faculty. As a pastoral lead, he was able to forge excellent relationships with students, staff and parents, which is where he honed his ability to engage others. In addition to his EdTech roles, Lawrence has a social enterprise called Just A Guy CIC which works with disengaged and disadvantaged students.
Bukky Yusuf is a thought leader with over 20 years teaching experience. She has undertaken several leadership roles within mainstream and special school settings, centring around professional development programmes, quality first teaching and learning, and effective implementations of educational technology.
Bukky is committed to increasing diverse leadership within education. Her work in this includes these roles: ambassador for Leadership Matters, network leader and coach for WomenEd and BAMEEd, and steering group member of the Teacher5aday well-being initiative. She co-edited 'The Big Book of Whole School Wellbeing' which was released in October 2021.
Jo Budden is the content manager of the British Council’s global websites for learners: LearnEnglish Kids, LearnEnglish Teens and LearnEnglish. The sites provide free, self-access learning materials to an audience of over 60 million annual visitors.
Jo has worked for the British Council since 1999 as a teacher, teacher trainer and materials writer. She has taught young learners and adults in Hong Kong, Egypt and Brazil, as well as Spain where she currently lives. She’s also the author of Teen World (a photocopiable resource book for teenagers) and co-author of the secondary course book Interactive, published by Cambridge University Press.
Jo has given presentations at ELT conferences globally about online safety and how teachers can guide their young learners through the digital jungles they're growing up in. She is currently concerned about how technology is affecting our attention spans and ability to focus.
Anayo Raphael Ngene has been teaching English studies and literature for the past 10 years. He was the head of language and communication department, Child of Promise School, Lagos Nigeria, where he led a team of educators in promoting digital and inclusive pedagogy. He coordinated the International Schools Award and has received different certifications ranging from integrating international curriculum to inclusive pedagogies.
Anayo is an ardent practitioner of digital learning, and now teaches at Canterbury International School Lagos. He has been involved in a lot of international educational activities. He led the staff in their work on the Connecting Classrooms through Global Learning programme, in partnership with Ashton-on-Mersey School in Sale, England.
