To help us with the quality and independence of our thinking, we draw on the expert advice of both our sector advisory groups and our UK country advisory committees.
Members of these groups and committees serve in an advisory capacity and have no decision-making responsibilities.
Reflecting our main business areas, we have advisory groups for our work in:
The role of the sector advisory groups is to:
- support the British Council in its mission to create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and wider world
- act as an advocate for the British Council’s work
- advise on the development of the British Council’s strategy
- ensure that the leadership teams of our business areas are kept informed of major developments in their respective sectors
- serve as a channel of professional advice within the areas of expertise represented on the group
- offer insights and identify new opportunities and trends
- create links between the British Council and the communities within the sector for whom our work has particular relevance.
UK country advisory committees
We have UK country advisory committees in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We publish lists of the members of each committee in our annual report every year.
Each UK country advisory committee aims to:
- support the British Council in its mission to create ‘friendly knowledge and understanding’ between the people of the UK and wider world
- act as an advocate for the British Council’s work in each UK country and across the UK as a whole
- provide advice on the development of the British Council’s strategy
- advise the British Council on major developments in the public, educational, economic and cultural life in each UK country
- serve as a channel of professional advice within the areas of expertise represented on the committee, offer fresh insights and identify new opportunities
- provide access to communities within each UK country for whom the British Council’s work has particular relevance.
