The salary paid to the language assistant you are hosting depends on your institution's location within the UK and the number of hours the assistant works.

Modern language assistants work a minimum (standard) of 12 hours per week, for which assistants receive a gross monthly salary.

Any hours worked beyond the standard 12-hour period (up to 18 hours per week in total) are charged at a fixed hourly rate. Additional hours should be negotiated directly with your language assistant. You can also negotiate additional hours with your language assistant in exchange for benefits such as accommodation.

You cannot offer a language assistant a lower allowance in return for fewer hours.

Irish language assistants do not have to work the minimum of 12 hours a week. Please contact us with questions about our Irish language assistants programme.

Mandarin Chinese Language Assistants – costs involved

With Mandarin Chinese set to be one of the most vital languages internationally, it has never been more important to connect young people in the UK with China! Knowledge of China and Chinese culture opens up a world of opportunities for your students, and an ability to communicate in Mandarin can really make them stand out from the crowd.

The official period of appointment for Mandarin Chinese language assistants in the UK is from September 2024 to 30 June 2025 (41 weeks). A shorter period of appointment from 01 October 2024 – 31 May 2025 is also available for Mandarin Chinese language assistants.

Funding for the programme means that UK host institutions only pay Mandarin Chinese language assistants the National Living Wage  (£11.44) for a minimum of 12 hours a week worked, reducing costs dramatically. This wage remains the same regardless of UK region.

With the latest increase of National Living Wage (April 2023), the minimum cost of hosting a Mandarin Chinese language assistant for one academic year is now £6,663.48*. This cost includes the one-off £1,035 Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) which should be reimbursed directly to the assistant by the UK host institution(s) involved in the sharing arrangements.

*This figure is subject to change dependent on any future National Living Wage announcements effectgive from April 2025, if you employ the Assistant for more than 12 hours per week, or if the cost of the Immigration Health Surcharge increases.

Chinese language assistants must be paid for their full period of appointment, including during school holidays as laid out in our Terms and Conditions
