Yumiko Moore. This study investigated what would constitute a valid English writing task for Japanese university admission purposes. It was based on an online survey, interviews and documentation. The results showed that a valid English writing test should consist of direct writing tasks such as impromptu writing in argumentative or expository discourse mode or summary with single text or multiple texts.
