In 2021, the British Council introduced a new programme, Leading Learning for Gender Equality (LL4GE), initially targeting 1,083 low-performing schools in Zimbabwe, many of which are in rural areas with poor infrastructure and limited access to technology. A pilot phase was conducted with 300 of these schools across three Zimbabwean districts: Beitbridge, Muzarabani, and Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe (UMP).

Research was carried out to assess the success of the LL4GE pilot and to determine whether a full-scale programme could be implemented in Zimbabwe and other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. The evaluation focused on four key areas: the relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability of the LL4GE programme.

Key issues:

  • Unbalanced numbers of male and female participants and facilitators.
  • Lack of continuity of participation and facilitation

It was recommended to extend the programme and contextualise the resources and materials to the Zimbabwean context.
