Ghana's agricultural sector faces a shortage of skilled workers, particularly in technical roles essential for increasing productivity. Through the EU and BMZ funded VET Toolbox programme, the British Council is addressing this challenge by providing training tailored to private sector needs and concrete employment opportunities.
Having developed curricula in the areas of Agronomy, Farm Enterprise Management and Tractor Mechanisation, the project has seen 230 students completing their studies at one of five Vocational Training Institutes. They are now completing workplace experience learning placements across 40 participating commercial farms, giving them the practical skills they need for successful careers in agriculture. This is the first time that agricultural skills courses in Ghana have formally incorporated a practical learning element.
As the project comes to a close, we hope to be able to share best practices and policy recommendations with policy makers, education providers and employers to enhance future agriculture training across Ghana. Learn more about the project in the video above!
